12th Oct - Guest Speaker - Colette from the Basingstoke & District Young Carers

Who We Are

Basingstoke & District Young Carers is a registered Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO) supporting young carers aged 8 to 18 across the Basingstoke & Deane district.

We provide support, opportunities and a safe space for young people whose lives are affected by the illness, disability, mental health condition, addiction or additional needs of a family member.

By raising awareness, reducing isolation and helping young carers build confidence and resilience, we work to ensure that no young carer faces their challenges alone.

Founded in 2009 and officially established as a charity in 2019, Basingstoke & District Young Carers is dedicated to empowering young carers and their families.

Young carers responsibilities - acknowledged and rewarded by Basingstoke Loddon Rotary club

Responsibilities Some Young Carers Take On

Some young carers take on additional responsibilities at home to support a parent, sibling or relative. Others may not perform these practical tasks themselves, but the needs of those close to them can still significantly impact on their daily lives. The examples below illustrate some of the responsibilities that some young carers may undertake.

Who is a Young Carer?

A young carer is a child or young person whose daily life is affected by the illness, disability, mental health condition, addiction or additional needs of a family member.

Some young carers provide practical or emotional support at home. Others may not see themselves as carers at all. However, the needs of someone in their family can still create additional responsibilities, pressures, worries or challenges that affect their childhood.

They may help look after a parent, sibling or relative. They may worry about a loved one, miss out on opportunities enjoyed by their friends, take on responsibilities beyond their years, or find that family circumstances affect their confidence, education, wellbeing or social life.

Every young carer’s experience is different.

What they have in common is that the needs of someone close to them can significantly impact on their own lives.

At Basingstoke & District Young Carers, we believe no child should face those challenges alone.

Out of the Woods - by NHS England

While these words provide a glimpse into the world of young carers, it’s important to acknowledge that ‘Out of the Woods,’ a video created for NHS England, offers a more poignant and authentic portrayal of their experiences. Please make some time to watch this short film.
