Basingstoke Loddon Rotary held the Rotary Technology Tournament again this year, kindly hosted by Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT). 76 students from local schools and colleges participated in the tournament. The tournament comprises of 3 separate age groups 11 - 18 Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced.
The teams of 4 students each were provided with details of the task.

This year the teams were asked to design, construct and test a vehicle to run inside a pipeline to clear debris. The vehicle had to be capable of starting, stopping and reversing by the use of an electrical switch.

The teams were asked to produce a portfolio to include reasons for choosing the final design, design principles etc. Judges carried out assessments of the teams' portfolios and also the performance of their constructed vehicles.

The Worshipful the Mayor of Basingstoke Deane Cllr Colin Phillimore complimented the students on all their hard work and presented the winning teams with trophies and all students received certificates.
The feedback from both students and school staff was very positive saying they found the tournament enjoyable and looking forward to attending next year.

When asked if the tournament fulfils an educational need some comments from teachers were:
definitely - lots of transferable skills,
yes it challenges students in creativity and construction, makes pupils think and use their STEM skills - meets educational needs.

Also in general comments:
Fantastic day had by all that attended
A really enjoyable day - staff and students very friendly - great event again well done!
An excellent day that we love coming each year.
Some interesting replies from students when asked if they had learned anything new:
I learned that if you put your mind to something then you can create it.
Tidiness is more important than I thought.
